Climbing a burning rope

“David Johnson I am loving your book. Just great. Can’t wait to get to the next chapter. Thank you so much.

The first third of David’s book is terrific. His straightforward writing style reminds me of Frank McCourt of Angela’s Ashes fame. The early chapters are full of intense feeling, though written with an admirable degree of restraint – solid story telling. David describes the heartbreak of a child raised without the nurturing attention and love that is essential for a young human being to flourish. There’s also a fascinating description of his boyhood years in Synanon, where he struggled to make sense of his deep loneliness in an alien environment. Notwithstanding the palpable suffering, there is a great deal of humor. It’s rare for a book to make me laugh out loud. This one got me several times.”

“This book was not only interesting but educational as well. It’s a story of a boy of seven whose mother dropped him and his sister off at a place that housed a dangerous cult. He did not see his mother again for several years. He was raised by the cult members for 5 years, resulting in him heading down a life of drinking, drugs, sex and crime. He finally finds God and makes his way out of all of this horror.”

“What an incredible story…and a very gifted writer. David and I grew up in Synanon together for a while there. He was such a sweet kid in my eyes. His experience was far more different than mine as I was one of the 1st kids there and was pretty much protected for this reason.
My heart goes out to you David. What an excellent writer you are! A must read!!!”

“As I was also a child who lived the Synanon experience with David, this book brought up feelings I had buried for many years. At the point where you were dropped at the school, I almost couldn’t continue, the memories flooded in and it was almost too much for me to read on. I’m glad that I was able to finish the book and I am grateful to you for sharing your story. I think anyone who has survived this kind of childhood terror will appreciate your words and maybe it will help them to heal knowing that they are not alone. Thank you David for sharing.”
